¿Cuál es la diferencia entre “among – between” y “within – in”?

Seguramente en tus cursos de inglés has encontrado las palabras “among – between” y “within – in” y cuando las has interpretado la idea es “entre” o “en”, ¡pero hay diferencias! Por eso, en el post de hoy del BRITÁNICO te explicaremos las diferencias entre estas palabras y en qué contextos se deben usar .
El uso de “between” y “among”
Por lo general, BETWEEN hace referencia a dos o más sustantivos distintos entre sí, mientras que AMONG hace referencia a dos o más sustantivos dentro de un mismo grupo. Mira los ejemplos:
– My brother was sitting between Mary and Josh yesterday at the stadium.
– Our house is between the woods, the river and the village.
– She was standing among a crowd of noisy children.
– Among all the students, Billy is the most proactive and positive.
Como siempre, existen frases hechasl las que tus teachers llaman “collocations”. En este tema en particular, con las palabras “relationship” y “difference” siempre se usa BETWEEN :
– The relationship between all the members of my family has always been a healthy one.
– It’s the same product but at a different price, is there a difference between them?
En resumen, con between se pueden nombrar sustantivos específicamente y por separado, sean dos, tres o más, mientras que en among se usan sustantivos que pertenecen a un solo grupo.
El uso de “in” y “within”
In suele relacionarse a “en” y within a “dentro de un espacio o tiempo delimitado”. Lee estos ejemplos y trata de descubrir los usos o las diferencias:
TIEMPO:
– I’ll see you in the afternoon, ok?
– You must reply to this email within four days.
– In July the weather is usually cold and grey.
– Within the following three months, you are going to notice how your English has improved.
DISTANCIA:
– The park is within ten meters of my aunt’s house.
SENTIMIENTOS:
– For years, they tried to hide the feelings of frustration within them.
Recuerda que estas explicaciones son simplificadas, por eso no hay nada mejor que consolidar estos conceptos practicando con mucha lectura y con películas, así llegarás a un punto de fluidez y confianza en el que sólo sabrás que está bien “because it sounds right, I’ve heard it” 😉
